The L’Oréal – Unesco Awards 2008 for women in science

The L’Oréal – Unesco Awards aim to recognize, each year, five outstanding women researchers who have contributed to scientific progress. These exceptional women scientists serve as role models for the next generation, encouraging young women around the world to follow in their footsteps. Almost two thousand eminent members of the scientific community propose candidates for the Awards. Two juries, one in the Life Sciences, the other in the Material Sciences, meet in alternating years to select the Laureates from the fields of research. Each year, one Laureate is named from each continent. This year five women received the 2008 Awards, in recognition of their exceptional and exemplary careers in science that have opened new and sometimes revolutionary ways of improving human well-being. Each Laureate receives 100.000 US-Dollar. Among this year’s winners were Lihadh Al-Gazali from the United Arab Emirates, V. Narry Kim from Republic of Korea, Ada Yonath from Israel, Ana Belen Elgoyhen from Argentina and Elisabeth Blackburn from the USA. Additionally 15 L’Oréal – Unesco International Fellowships are allocated each year to young women researchers in Life Sciences, at the doctoral or post-doctoral level, whose promising projects have been accepted by a reputable institution outside their home country. Each Fellowship is worth a maximum of 40.000 US-Dollar over two years.
