Spanish campaign: Employment makes us equal
More than half a million Roma of working age live in Spain, however the number entering the labour market remains low. 55% of Roma people report that they have experienced some sort of discrimination when being on the job search. The Spanish organisation, Fundación Secretariado Gitano, has initiated an awareness-raising campaign, featuring TV advertisements, posters and brochures, to raise awareness of the prejudices that still exist within the society about Roma people and which make it difficult for them to obtain a decent job.
Fundación Secretariado Gitano has already run the ‘Acceder‘ program which promotes the inclusion of the Roma in the labour market since 2000. This programme so far has helped more than 35,000 people finding employment. The success of the program can be traced down to fact that the organizers were able to change the attitudes of Roma families, business and society in general, create networks of cooperation with administrations and companies, and supported stakeholders in developing active policies to promote inclusion. The Fundación Secretariado Gitano is a not-for-profit organisation which provides services for the development of the Roma community in Spain and in Europe.
