ILO calls for more gender awareness in South Asia
According to the latest report “Gender Audit for Gender Equality Promotion” published by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), gender awareness is limited in workplaces as well as the commitment of employees for the implementation and understanding of gender issues in South Asia. The report focuses in particular on the role of employees in promoting gender-sensitive workplaces in South Asia and points out the increasing involvement of women in the labour market; for example, in the manufacturing and Information Technology and IT-enabled sectors in South Asia. As a result, the integration of women and equal opportunities becomes more and more a necessity. ILO’s Global Gender Audit coordinator Joyti Tuladhar states, “We all have to create awareness at our level in the respective workplaces and that is how the process of change in perspective will slowly take place.” According to reports, there is already an acknowledgement that women are increasingly becoming more important for the economies in South Asia. Furthermore, employers are trying to foster gender sensitive work environments in order to attract and retain more women workers.
