Finnish population is aging more rapidly than most populations in Europe

In his recent “Global Report on Aging”, Finnish researcher Kimmo Leppo found out that, due to its fertility history and recent increases in longevity, the Finnish population is aging more rapidly than most populations in Europe. The proportion of people over 65 will increase from 16 to 27 percent in 2030. Finland will face enormous costs for the growing needs for services such as long-term care, Leppo stated. The researcher says the Finnish care system is strong (municipalities have the main responsibility for all basic services) but long-term care should be seen in a wide context. Modern and sustainable concepts of long-term care need to be established, such as housing adapted to older people’s needs, appropriate use of assistive technologies or the creation of physical environments with no barriers to mobility.
