European Commission’s report on Diversity and business

The European Commission’s ‘Continuing the Diversity Journey: Business Practices, Perspectives and Benefits’ reports on the current status of Diversity in small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). 1,200 companies across 27 European states were surveyed and 100 SMEs and 64 SME intermediaries were interviewed. Qualitative and quantitative analysis showed that the majority of SMEs recognize the business benefits of Diversity, but few actually access these benefits through failing to establish adequate human resource strategies.
A number of challenges and uncertainties face this group of companies in harnessing the power of Diversity. One major barrier may be that many intermediary organizations are ill-equipped and under-informed to support SMEs in establishing and furthering their Diversity programmes. “These results reconfirm that additional Diversity training and support is now ‘a must’ within companies and organizations. Companies of any size and employees in any number can reap the benefits of investing in the strategic implementation of Diversity & Inclusion,” stated Michael Stuber, Diversity expert at European Diversity. For the time being, much responsibility falls on business schools to train and educate the leaders of tomorrow.
