Al Jazeera starts English-speaking programme

Al Jazeera, a well-known Arabic-language news network operating from Doha (Quatar), has started an English-speaking programme in mid-November. The news channel first gained international attention after the September 11 terrorist attacks because they broadcasted videos of Osama bin Laden.
The new English speaking programme wants to build up a completely new image of news broadcasting from the Middle East – offside the controversial and battlesome attitude of their Arabic mother programme. With broadcasting centres in Doha, Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington DC and more than 250 correspondents in 30 countries, “Al Jazeera English” aims to become “the English-language channel of reference for Middle Eastern events”.
Media journalists have welcomed the creation of Al Jazeera’s English programme as “a good opportunity for better mutual understanding”. “We want to tell stories that are untold so far”, states Al Jazeera anchorman Jasim Azzawi and highlights a recent report about artifical insemination – a no-no in conservative Islamic societies. The report was part of Al Jazeera’s special magazine for women.
